How the hearing screening works
Real hearing tests (audiograms) measure the quietest sound you can detect at each frequency, one ear at a time. This screening follows the same idea in a simplified way: for each frequency it plays a tone and lets you say whether you can still hear it as the volume steps down. The fainter the tone you can catch, the better your response at that pitch.
For the most accurate result
- Use headphones or earbuds — laptop and phone speakers can’t separate your left and right ears.
- Find a quiet room and set a comfortable, moderate device volume before you start (don’t crank it).
- Test one ear at a time — the tool tells you which ear each round is for.
- Answer honestly; guessing skews the result.
What your result means (and doesn’t)
If you comfortably hear the faintest tones at every pitch, that’s reassuring for a quick check. Trouble with the higher pitches (4–8 kHz) is common with age and noise exposure, but a browser screening can’t diagnose anything — your device, headphones and room all affect it.
