We publish only figures we can source. This page lists where our data and guidance come from.

Water-resistance ratings

Every rating in our Phone Water-Resistance Database is the manufacturer’s own published IP (Ingress Protection) rating, defined by the international standard IEC 60529. The first digit is dust protection, the second is water protection (for example, IP68 = dust-tight and rated for immersion). We record the rating, the tested depth and time the manufacturer states, and the release year. Where a manufacturer publishes no rating, we show “Not rated” rather than guessing.

Important caveats on those ratings

• IP ratings are lab results for new devices in fresh water. Seals age, so real-world resistance decreases over time.
• Most manufacturers exclude liquid damage from warranty, even on water-resistant models.
• Salt water, pool chemicals, hot water and pressure (showers, jets) can exceed what the rating covers.

Found an out-of-date rating or an error? We update the database when manufacturers change specs. The dataset is openly available as JSON and CSV under CC BY 4.0.
